In underground hip hop circles around the world; D-Styles is one of the names most
associated with turntablism & the art of scratching.
Thanks to the popularity of the Internet and the explosion of scratch videos, D-Styles is influencing turntablists and
scratch artists around the world. His approach differs from the highly technical, yet
repetitive scratching that currently dominates the scene, in that it emphasizes musical
composition and style.
D-Styles developed his world-renowned turntable skills growing up in San Francisco’s Bay Area, which by 1992, was at the forefront of the turntablism scene. After many years of musical development and experimentation with different styles, D-Styles began to be recognized as one of the region’s foremost turntable instrumentalists. In 1997 he was invited to join the world’s most elite group, the Invisibl Skratch Piklz (ISP). ISP was an ensemble group of deejays, each of who was acclaimed in his own right. As a group, ISP completely changed the way the world viewed the turntable: Due to their incredible innovations and dazzling performances, the turntable went from being a record player, to a musical instrument.
D-Styles is also a member of the collective DJ Crew the World Famous Beat Junkies. Members include DJ Babu, Melo-D, J-Rocc, Rhettmatic & Mr. Choc. In 2002 D-Styles released his groundbreaking album Phantazmagorea on the Beat Junkie Sound Label.. Phantazmagorea was the first album of its kind to be produced entirely from scratching. D-Styles used scratching to play each individual musical element of his songs. The result was a classic, and is a feat yet to be excelled. A live performance of this album was released on DVD titled "A Night at the Knitting Factory".
D-Styles is currently an Instructor at the Beat Junkie Institute of Sound DJ School in Los Angeles, CA. D-Styles continues to be at the forefront of Turntable Music & focusing on producing music.
